LEE HUNT’S PROMO OF THE WEEK

Parodies are nothing new to the Oscars telecast promotion. And, of course, there is always the obligatory montage of nominated movies. But this year ABC scored on both fronts.

Why I like these spots

The parody of Top Gun Maverick with Jimmy Kimmel, John Hamm, Charles Parnell and Billy Crystal is well-written, terrifically played and very funny. Who knew Jimmy Kimmel was such a good actor? You can see the full 4:00 piece here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGsXh_loS7k, but personally, I think the 60 below works best.

While the :30 montage of movies seems inspired by the amazing, and on-going, FX on Hulu campaign, it definitely stands on its own. A great piece of editing and sound design.

Let’s hope the telecast lives up to the promotion!
